If warming is happening more in non-urban areas, how can global warming be due to urban heat islands?
Click the link below and check out the map of the average global warming from 2000-2009. This indicates where the surface stations (some of which have been criticized by that TV weatherman) are reporting the most and the least warming.
http://www.giss.nasa.gov/research/news/20100121/10year.gif
Note the patterns of where surface stations report that global warming is more or less strong. It bears absolutely no resemblance to urbanization in the world. Quite the contrary.
Global warming is greatest in places like Alaska, Northern Canada, Northern Russia, and the Antarctic Peninsula. The African deserts. How could that be urban heat?
Least in places like southern China, Florida, or the coasts of Australia, which contain massive urban areas. Just about average along the NE coast of the USA, one of the most urbanized places on Earth.
Urban stations are not showing the most warming, so how could they be distorting the data?
"It’s simple Bob, there are no temperature stations in the areas where the warming is occurring in Alaska, Northern Canada, Northern Russia, they are extrapolated hundreds of miles away from stations that are experiencing UHI."
A. There are no cities even reasonably close. The temperature stations that are used for extrapolation along with the actual stations in the far north, are nowhere near cities.
B. Hadley doesn’t do the extrapolations, and leaves chunks of the Arctic not well covered out. Their results are maybe (maybe not), 0.1 degrees different, not enough to change anything much. Details:

Didn’t you know Bob that it’s only the urban glaciers that are melting and the urban stratosphere that’s cooling?
is it true that the goverment is going to far?
i dont know how many ppl got this email and i dont know if its true here i copyed and pasted
The Plant City Living Center has told Mrs. Arnold, an 85-year-old grandmother in Florida, that federal law prohibits her from displaying any religious words or items associated with Christmas in the common area of her apartment building.
According to the Center, The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued a directive banning "any religious symbols or religious words associated with Christmas." Under the guidelines issued by HUD, the elderly grandmother cannot place a small Christmas tree outside her door (because that area is a "commons area") if it contains any religious symbols or religious words, even an angel!
If the residents want to have a Christmas party in their Community room, they cannot call it a Christmas party. The Center says HUD directs residents not to use the word "Christmas" but to use the word "Holiday."
frankly this is to much. i took a class that was all about american history and the constatution and the bill of rights and the decleration of indapendence. it taught us all about that stuff im 13 but im very aware of things. plus the part of the outside of her door being called a commons area is absalutly disturbing. she is paing for the apartment and somone can not just come and sit on her porch for no reason. even if its not true. i still dont like it.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Federal money should not be used to fund religious displays. However apparently religious fanatics caused HUD to give in and allowed the display: http://slantedright.blogspot.com/2007/11/leftist-war-on-christianity-heats-up.html
The area outside her door is a common area for the other residents.
The community room is paid for by government money. As such, if a Christmas party was held by residents in that room the government would be paying a part of the cost of a Christmas party. Unless they are planning a winter solstice party as well they are establishing Christianity over other religions. The Plant City Living Center is a HUD assisted living facility, not a full price apartment complex.
You can not operate a church in the rotunda of the US capital building either.
First Lomography Camera?
I’ve recently become interested in purchasing my first lomography camera, but i was wondering what is a good first time camera? recently the only place i know where they are readily avaible is "urban outfitters".
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/category.jsp?popId=APARTMENT&navAction=poppushpush&isSortBy=true&navCount=189&pushId=APARTMENT_MEDIA&id=A_MEDIA_CAMERAS
I’m not sure which is the right kind to purchase, but i beleive i’ve heard about the "Diana". And also, if i do buy this, whats reccomended to purchase with it? (such as flash, lenses) Also, where do you get your photos developed? Thank you!
I’m not familiar with lomography, but as far as developing your pictures, it depends on the kind of film it uses. If it uses 35mm film, you can get that developed anywhere (CVS, Target, Walgreens, Costco – quality varies). You can also send them to places like Clark color Labs, photoworks, etc.
If it uses medium format film (like 120 film), you will probably need to go to a dedicated photo lab (more expensive).
Are you specifically interested in "lomography", or just film in general? If you are simply interested in film, there are much better cameras out there than Dianas or Holgas. You can find used 35mm film SLRs for pretty cheap now, and they can take better pictures (if you know how to use them).

Does urban sprawl annoy you?
I don’t think suburbs should exist because they take up so much more land than they should – it’s not efficient. I think right past the edge of a city there should be nothing but nature. When new residents move in they can move right into condos , apartments , and houses being built at the edge of the city.
I definately approve of small towns existing , nothing wrong with those at all but it should be hours from any city to ensure that it won’t become a suburb.
Suburbs should all be destroyed and patched up with nature. The cities themselves should maintain high density, and *get* density if it doesn’t have any. But with places like Atlanta and Houston none of this would be possible.
Zippity is that so explain further – the input from your fingers can’t back anything up.
Three cheers for NATURE!

THE HORROR AT WILLINGTON
It was a nice house. The house which would come to be the key which would lock me in a permanent dungeon of horror forever. In 1997 I came to
Willington,Iowa. A small town into which little big buisiness or large shopping centers had come. I had moved here because of the quiet and calm of a small
town.
The house was an old Colonial era house of modest but large size. It was on a sprawling piece of land with many caves, creeks, cliffs, pools, and other
geological oddities I felt would be quite enjoyed by my daughter and son. The locals were never incredibly friendly to us urban folks. But that was not a big
problem because we would only come to town for groceries and other things of the sort. We had 250 acres to explore. Quite enough to occupy our free time. I
was an author. I had gained custody of the children from Martha and was very happy to have my children back with me.
In the first few months we had grown to love the place and we all felt a certain emotional bond with its charm. We all slept well in our beds confident of a
new start in Willington. The first few months were normal. We all felt adventurous and we would alll go explore the woods and caves and picnic on the heavily forested hills.
It started in 1998 two and a half months after our settlement there. My 10 year old daughter complained of pains in the
chest. I took her to the doctor and he saw nothing physically wrong. She took some aspirin and that was all. The next day both my children were complaining
of the same pains. My son being one year older than her. Could maybe the doctor said be a growth spert. I thought it might be gas. But after about a week the pains had stopped in both of them.
The next few weeks were normal except for my son was not going out to explore in the woods anymore. I asked if he would go with me but he simply said "But
you cant fight it." In a childish way. I went into the woods to show him there was nothing wrong. But he just said he didnt want to play in the woods anymore. Never again would my boy or girl go into the woods.
A month or so after these incidents. I was typing at my typewriter and as normal the pitter patter of the typewriter made me dose off in my chair. I remember distinctly horrible dreams of doom and twisted inner torture which numbed feeling. I also had dreams of great outer spherical battles between great forces of godly power. White great mounds of force lunging down upon dark forboding rocky fluids twisting around the light
figures of…good I gathered. I felt confident at first behind the great white beings but soon my confidence turned into uncertainy which became terror at
the sight of constant battle between these forces. Soon where I stood was directly in between these forces constant struggling. I woke up with straining on my chest as my children descibed.
Leaning back on my chair I fell forward as my eyes met the paper which had been typed in front of me. I looked over it seeing that it was complete gibberish.
Letters put together so that when you pronounced them a horrible feeling in the throat came over you. The words and sounds when read came out as gutteral
ugly sounds which seemed to be words. I felt incredibly strange reading it. I felt as though I could almost read them. Like almost being able to read latin
from derivatives. But I came to terms with the fact I couldnt read them. I came back to myself after
wondering over the paper. I began alarmingly worried about what had typed it and why it was gibberish. I felt a great stress and instincively ran to check on
my kids. They were both downstairs doing the work I had assigned to them on the floor in front of the television. They were working and watching T.V. at the
same time. I immediatly asked if they were messing with my typewriter. They both said no reminding me they werent allowed in my study. I immediately went
throught the possibilities of how this strange yet forbodingly intriguing piece of writing had been typed. In my sleep I might have run my arm over the
keyboard, but how would that explain the spacing between words? I became very alarmed and my children asked what I had. I showed them the paper and they knew
nothing about it. I had forgotten about the great pain in my chest with all the wondering. I had no idea what to do. I seemed to subconciously make the
connection between my dreams and what had been on this paper and that the connection was…supernatural.
I decided after sitting there in the den for a while that I could bring it to a linguist at the university. I told the children we were going on a road trip and we left. Now in my enlightenment of the situation I can only imagine what would have been happening in the house while we were gone. The thought now of the house, vacant, at night, alone, fills me with terror at what could be at work in there. I knew something was wrong as I was leaving the house. I believe my children felt the same way.
We learned at the university that whatever it was it had no resemblance to anything the linguist we met ever had seen. I became very panicked at this and I could see even the children were alarmed and I had not told them the circumstances of what happened. I was dreading returning to the house I once found peaceful and calm. I began making excuses and errands we had before we could go back home. "We need to pick up some things for the car", "We need to go and get some gas for the mower", "We need more groceries", "Do you guys want to go to the toystore while we are out?"
Eventually we found ourselves inevitably walking back through the large white door to the house. Thoughts were speeding through my head the dreams, the letter on my desk, the pain in my chest, the unexplained fright me and my children were experiencing.
We had returned about eight hours after we had left at about 2 pm. I told the kids to go to bed and I would be downstairs watching T.V.. I honestly worried about my children in their bedrooms alone. In front of late night T.V., I soon fell asleep mentally and physically exhausted.
I found no rest even in sleep. My dreams were horrible nightmares worse than when I previously had them. Terrible black oozing substance turning all living things into desolate shells of their former selves. No sight of great white forces of good were to be found. Alone in darkness in the forest surrounded by appproaching horrible creatures. Lunging, creeping, using any forms of action to exert their silent malevolence. But soon they smote their malice loudly. My head panged with noise, torture of the mind. Surrounded. Doom.
I woke up in great alarm and panic. I was very worried about my boy and girl and ran as fast as I could upstairs to find them both hiding under the covers shivering and calling my name in a frightened voice. I immediatly knew something was very wrong. I uncovered the children and told them to come with me and that we were getting out of the house. I grabbed a .38 revolver under my bed,my wallet, and my car keyes and rushed out the door with my children tripping out of the door behind me.
Give opinions and tips please.
Well its not a finished story. Its a horror short story I’m writing. Give me tips I’m just 14.
What parts do you not get?
Sorry about the wierd spacing it was a messing up of my copy and pasting. Thats not how it looks on paper.
First of all, you take a potentially powerful situation and weaken it to dishwater by using passive tense all over the place. Why say I had gained custody ,.,. when you can just say I gained custody? See how stronger that sounds? Another form of passive writing is saying something like …groceries and other things of the sort. … it sounds flip, like you just brushed off your reader by skipping information … Its better to just say groceries or explain what the other things are .. It makes your writing stronger.
You have some spelling errors here and there and a word or two missing (proofread better!) but all in all it isnt a bad start. Just avoid too much information dumping – space your story out evenly and keep your reader pushing onward by not dumping a ton of information on them all at once. Do your research – a doctor would NEVER give a kid aspirin – they havent for years. Tylenol or Motrin yes – aspirin no. It’s details like that which cheat your reader and suspend reality. Research is a major part of writing.
Also Im not a big fan of big words….smote their malice? Those kind of expressions tend to antagonize readers.
Next, the chldren were calling his name in frightened voices – not one frightened voice.
No nightmares, but not bad. By the way is it a computer or an old fashioned typewriter? I really didnt get a sense of what it was for sure.
Keep writing. Pax – C.
Help with this question please?

c.) incorporates the Central Industrial Region, at the heart of which lies the city of Moscow
d.) has been overtaken by the Novosibirsk region east of the Urals
e.) extends into recently-absorbed Eastern Europe, and now includes Poland and Hungary.
haha sorry, but what?
My college roommate and I are moving into an apartment, and we are looking for housewares?
We need a place to find cool housewares for cheap. We are both sophomores in college and are on a somewhat tight budget. We like interesting things from Urban Outfitters and Crate & Barrel. I have already looked at Target, and Ikea, Overstock, just looking to see if anyone knows of any ‘different’ sites. Thanks!
I realize you want "cool", but if money is tight, you should consider "practical". Expand your search to dollar stores–Dollar General and Dollar Tree if you have any in your area. Scour yard sales and flea markets, too.
is all this information correct?
Good _________ 8H and Mr. Clare, this morning I will be having a presentation on Peter Douglas Beattie. This Presentation will cover his biographical information, career background, his successes, possible criticisms and the inspiration for this person.
Peter Douglas Beattie was born on the 18th November 1952 at Atherton, a small town nearly 2000km from Brisbane. He was raised by his grandmother and was the youngest of 7 children. Peter Beattie grew up to be quite a sports and drama fanatic playing cricket, rugby and hockey, he was involved in such plays as Gilbert and Sullivan as well as Pirates of Penzance. He was also a keen scout, he would roam the streets with 12 fellow scouts looking for good deeds and also enjoyed climbing Mt. Baldy. He was very successful at school being the Dux and School Captain at Atherton State High School, there he met Heather Scott-Halliday and later married her, they currently have three grown up children, Dennis and Matthew who are both 22 and Elizabeth who is 24. Beattie then moved to Brisbane where he graduated with a law degree from the University of Queensland, earned a Master of Arts degree from the Queensland University of Technology and then entered the practise of law. He supported himself through uni by working as a taxi driver and in a canning factory. His qualifications now include a B.A, LL.B and M.A. Then In 1974 he joined the labor party which he had been in opposition for 17 years. He is also a part of many diverse groups such as the Greek Club, Lions, Queensland Rugby League Club, New farm Neighbourhood Centre, Chinese business Club, The Society of St. Andrews and Queensland association for mental Health. He already sounds like the perfect politician.
Peter Beattie has achieved many political successes which the ‘Queensland Labor Times’ describes as ‘A Dynamic Decade’. Peter Beattie was interested in economics, health, local government, housing, criminal law reform, transport, heritage, town planning, urban planning, and inner city development. With all the interests you’d think that he’d be less talk more do however he has made many factual accomplishments such as the water grid, the water pipe coming from Cairns, free health system, he abolished the ambulance levy, created a superior Criminal Justice System and created the ‘Smart State’ license plate. In 1997, Peter Beattie released the Community JobsPlan – a major job creation program, then in 1998 Peter Beattie won 44 out of 89 seats in the June state elections and on the 26th of June Peter Beattie became Premier of Queensland, this was a major turning point for the labor party.
Economically, Queensland prospered like never before with Peter Beattie as Premier. When he announced his policy in 1998 to bring unemployment fewer than 5%, he was given little chance. On the environment, perhaps his greatest achievement was to ban land-clearing in the state, a decision which is almost single-handedly responsible for Australia. Peter Beattie also built the giant new park at Lang Stadium while liberalising Queensland’s gay sex, liquor licensing and prostitution laws quietly in the background. Peter Beattie really has changed Queensland into a smart state.
Peter Beattie isn’t perfect, all of you could agree, there has been certain things that Peter Beattie has done that have aggravated certain people. Many people have disagreed with Beattie’s handling with the Dr. Haneef case, John Howard accused Beattie of leading a political campaign against the police handling the case. Beattie ignored Queensland’s water crisis until it was almost too late, basically praying for rain and not doing anything for Queensland for a period of time. Peter Beattie appeals more to the ‘Dead, White Male’ as he hasn’t at all connected with minorities or was willing to help them. Peter Beattie really hasn’t at all done that much to seem like a nuisance to anyone.
Role Models are important because they boost children’s self esteem, help them to build models and positive values, teach children to set attainable goals and provide achieving their goals. Peter Beattie has accomplished many things, such as community awareness, economic, and infrastructure development. I think the person most inspired by him would be his daughter, Elizabeth. If all Australian’s role model was Peter Beattie I think the world would be an ideal place to reside. Peter Beattie has changed the world so much and if everyone was like him just imagine what would happen. Ultimately, Peter Beattie’s premiership will be looked be back upon as a series of crises interspersed with many election victories.
On the 10th of September 2007, Peter Beattie resigned as Premier at a Cabinet meeting; he spent 9 years as premier making Queensland better.

Places to shop and eat in Boston?
Hi,
On Tuesday, I’m going to Boston with a friend. Though I’ve been to Boston many times and I only live about one and half hours away, I never go just to walk around, but instead I go for business. My friend used to live in Cambridge, but hasn’t really walked around either for years.
On Tuesday, we plan on going to the Fine Arts Museum. We also want to stop by the Urban Outfitters in Cambridge. Our main goal of the trip is to just walk around and shop-but where? We don’t want to spend our whole time in Cambridge besides the quick stop at Urban Outfitters.
So, if anyone knows any cool, hip, fun places to shop it Boston, please let me know. Any good restaurants or coffee shops you know of? That would be great as well.
Thanks so much!
Walk down Newbury Street, starting at the Hynes stop on the T. (Mass Ave and Newbury). There’s actually an Urban Outfitters there. The first few blocks are where the hip stores are, the next few blocks have interesting galleries. The blocks closest to the Public Garden are stodgy.
Also check out Copley Place and the Prudential Shops.
Harvard Square Cambridge is turning into Just Another Mall. Some people like Faneuil Hall/Qunicy Market.
