Isn’t urban sprawl annoying?

Posted on February 28th, 2010 by admin in urban places after | 1 Comment »

In the USA its such a problem. Large cities in Canada don’t have a million suburbs like the usa does.

Some cities themselves in the USA don’t even have an urban feel – like Atlanta, Houston, Phoenix, etc. They might have some vibrant points but the housing development is suburban all across in those places.

Texas: A good place for a second home?

Posted on February 28th, 2010 by admin in rural and urban places | 7 Comments »

I’am from California and I recently visited some family in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I also got to see a little of East Texas (Tyler), Central Texas (Austin), and West Texas (El Paso). Anyway, I really enjoyed the time that I spent in Texas. The people seem to be pretty nice and hospitable throughout the state and their seems to be so much to see and do there (and PLENTY of space) that I’am thinking of possibly buying a vacation home there someday. I’am really into watersports and Texas seems to have plenty of good-sized lakes (I counted over 20 just in the Dallas-Fort Worth area) and a coastline where I could go. I’am an outdoor enthusiast in general. so I pretty much like anything that can be done outside the home, and Texas seem to offer almost everything. So would having a second home someday in Texas be a good idea? Where are some of the best places to have vacation homes in Texas (rural and urban)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I were you I would choose Austin, Austin is a great place if your into music. We have tons of venues all around Austin. We are the live music capital. We also have beautiful hill country views that are just breath taking. Every one in Austin is extremely friendly. Traffic is so so but people since the people are nice it is easy to get around. Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConahey (sorry dont think I spelled that right) are some of the locals. Lake Travis is a beautiful blue lake that you can swim, fish and go boating in. The only thing it doesnt have is a place to surf but Galveston is only 2.5 hrs away. Trust me if you choose austin you will live anywhere else.

Should i call? Very complicated situation… and im confused… 10 pts?

This is going to be a long story. Very very long story so be prepared.

Ok so, last week this girl asked me out to go shopping with her. I went to the mall with her, spent a good 6 hours walking around. I didnt know if i really wanted to date her at that time so i wasnt sure if it was a date or not…

So after going to the mall, she invited me to join her at her friend’s place. Her friend was having a sober party. So we go to the party as "friends" and the party lasts untill about 2 am… which is when everyoen else leaves and this girl tells me she’s sleeping over. She asks me to stay abit longer…

Ok so we go into the host’s room with the host and we watch a movie in the dark… up at one point, the host is kind of akward so she asks me if i’ve ever made out with anyone. I say yes i have. Then she asks the girl who asked me out if she’s ever made out. She says no.

So the host tells her. Why dont you get some practise? you have a guy right here. At that point i was kind of.. wow o_o. shocked.

But i made out with her. Then i went home.

I guess i fell in love that night…. Anyways

Two days later, we go out on a date and it was pretty crappy. I failed miserably because i didnt really plan anything out and it ended up as her taking me on the date. We went downtown and bought 3 concert tickets to a rock show fridaynight. One ticket for me and one for her and one for her friend ( i paid). After buying tickets we go back to our sub-urban neighboorhood and we have dinner etc etc…

The her friend (my good friend as well) shows up and we hang out for a bit… Eventually it gets late and i escort my new ladyfriend home. She says she’ll call friday during the day to say when we’d meet up to go down to the concert.

So on friday… I’m calling calling calling and she’s not picking up at all…

then at around 5:00 her friend (also my friend) calls and tells me to meet up. So i meet up and she comes up to me with 50 bucks and hands it to me. She says she bails out on the concert and my new girlfriend is bailing too (they were talking)… Aparently she’s having lots of trouble and not feeling well..

So i’m not sure what to do. I’ve lost some money and i have no people to go to the concert with… then at 6:18, 1 hr before we leave, my girlfriend finnally calls me. She says that she doesnt think this is the right time for a relationship and that she’s so sorry about what she’s done and she didnt mean to hurt me if she did…

I’m all like.. wtf. shocked but calm… Phone call lasted 20 seconds or less.

Later that night at around 2 am, her friend (my friend also) calls me and says that they spent the night shopping downtown… She tells me that my girlfriend was really down the entirenight and she says that she thinks my girlfriend is "unsure and confused". I ask her what the hell i’m supposed to do. She gives me her advice. She says wait it out. "if you try to talk to her, you might scare her off". she says that my girlfriend will call me when she’s calmed down. So i’m like ok.. i’ll wait…

All this time, however, i want to talk to her soo badly. I have no idea whats going on. The last time we spoke, we exchanged like 5 words. My friend is still telling me to wait it out but she isnt saying how long to wait. My other friend, however says that the longer that people wait, the more likely they’ll decide to say no to me because once you think things through, you end up saying no.

On facebook, i’ve seen that one of my friends wrote on my girlfriend’s wall asking about her "new bf"… and my gf responds with "its complicated"… Does that mean we’ve broken up or what?

To sum it up the relationship story:
We kissed our first "date"
We went out two or three times
She already said she wanted me to be with her.

So my question is… it’s been 5 days now since i’ve talked to my (ex)girlfriend. I have no idea what she’s thinking. She seems to be compromised between a break up and a relationship. I dont want to call her and scare her off… The friend who told me that actually knows her really well. But then again… should i call? if not, when should i?

Writing her is not so "in your face" or threatening. It will also peak her curiosity.

I would keep it short.

Things like: I like you. I’m thinking of you. I’d like to talk when you’re ready. I’m sorry if anything I did caused you heartache or confusion.

Good luck, man. Must of been a passionate make out session!

Where to shop other than A&F?

Posted on February 28th, 2010 by admin in other urban places | 9 Comments »

i want to shop at places other than abercrombie and hollister cause they are a little expensive. i know forever 21 is cheap but any other places? don’t say pacsun, urban outfitters, american eagle, wet seal, charlotte russe, and NO HOT TOPIC. something different though. thanks!
i hate it when people say "kohls" when like 5 other people have said the same thing
wow metsfan4life…you said you hate it too but you just did it…

Wal-Mart.
Target.
JC Penny.
H&M.
New York and Company
I could go on but I’ll spare you…..

Hollister and A&F are extremely overpriced and poor quality for their clothing, not to mention it all looks the same. You are looking for new places to shop but basically mentioned everything similar to your two choice stores. My suggestion is to think out-side of your poorly sewn clothing stores and trying something totally different for a change.

In high school I was voted "best dressed", the Hollister and other "brand name" girls were extremely pissed because they knew where I shopped and didn’t understand why their butts decked out in their $80 jeans didn’t win, but what they thought of me and my "stores" didn’t bother me one bit and it sure didn’t stop the rest of the school from following my fashion "trends".

Often I will pair a $20 dress I got from Target with $500 Coach tote and $200 sunglasses along with a $15 pair of flats from Wal-Mart and a great pair of earrings I scored off a clearance rack for $2 from Kohls polished off with a $300 DKNY coat from Macy’s and $10 scarf from Old Navy.

Search in tons of different stores, try on all different styles of clothing and in the end you might just surprised yourself with how much of a style and wardrobe you may just end up with.

Are there any dense walkable neighborhoods in Houston?

Posted on February 28th, 2010 by admin in urban place apartments | 3 Comments »

I’m looking for a dense, vibrant, urban, progressive, walkable neighborhood in Houston. A place that is full of shops, restaurants, bars/clubs, businesses and residential walk-up apartments all closely knit together… closely enough to where someone could walk between all of these places and could spend the day/evening out in that neighborhood ***without a car***. What is the best neighborhood for this in Houston???

Montrose, Midtown, Downtown, Houston Heights, and the Museum District are all good, safe walkable neighbourhoods in Houston. Downtown and the Museum District are well-connected with light rail, and all of the neighbourhoods I listed have good bus service if you get sick of walking.

What are some good places to live in South Florida?

Posted on February 26th, 2010 by admin in urban places after | 1 Comment »

I am hoping to pursue graduate studies after I receive my bachelor’s degree this December. After researching universities, and getting feedback from other people in my field of study (urban planning), it appears that Florida Atlantic University is a good choice (I currently live in Texas)

So I am wondering: What are some affordable places to live in Palm Beach, Broward, or Dade Counties that have many things to do regarding outdoor activities, places to eat, etc.?

Also, if anyone can recommend some places to eat or shop, that would be a plus.

Well in broward county miramar, pembroke pines, and davie, also fau has a campus in davie. So you wouldn’t be too far from school but in any of those cities you would be close to tons of shopping like the sawgrass mills mall, pembroke lakes mall, also the hard rock hotel and casino. Miramar is an up and coming area too. But i definitely say try to visit first and see how you like it. I would say don’t go to far down into miami maybe aventura, miami lakes thats it the more you go south in miami the more congestion and crazy driving, it be like going to a third world country!

Can anything be done to move more of the "less invasive techniques" to the rural hospitals?

Posted on February 26th, 2010 by admin in rural and urban places | 1 Comment »

Less invasive techniques (endovascular coiling for brain hemorrhages, port access heart surgeries) are generally concentrated in large urban hospitals. Apparently, this takes place because the patients that require these techniques are more complex and require many specialists available 24/7. The large urban hospitals usually have more specialist available 24/7. Doctors that treat these complex patients often move them to the large urban hospitals. The fact that these less invasive techniques are concentrated in the large urban hospitals means that many patients have to travel great distances to obtain these services. Another way of looking at this is: if you have (for example) a brain hemorrhage and are in a rural area, hundreds of miles from the large urban hospitals, you probably will not get these less invasive services. The surgeons in the hospital that treats you will have to drill into your skull. Assume that we could change, whatever, we need to. What would we need to change to move these techniques to more of the rural hospitals?

One problem with what you propose is that medical personnel need lots of practice to gain & maintain special skills. I would not want a member of my family treated by someone who hardly ever does a procedure. Putting highly trained specialists in a rural setting would not be maximizing a valuable resource.

However, I do understand that when the patient is you or a family member, you want the very best medical resources. A local doctor cannot offer the same expertise available in urban or university hospitals, so he/she can only provide what procedures he/she has been trained to perform.

As a resident in a rural community I have been faced with limited medical choices. When specialized treatment has been necessary, our family has chosen to travel wherever we can find the best resource. On emergencies that has never been more than 5 hours away, & on the two traumatic occasions when time was critical, fortunately helicopters were dispatched to carry family members to a topnotch trauma center. For dentistry & elective treatments I have several times traveled abroad, not only because it was cheaper, but I received much better care than was available here in the U.S. I travel 3,000 miles each way to get new contact lenses because the prescriptions are better there. For anything less than emergency care we can be really good consumers & seek the best for the cost of airline ticket & maybe a motel.

A good medical team includes doctors as well as informed patients & their families. We have a responsibility to become knowledgeable members of this team, & to not only determine what is best for ourselves, but to know how to choose good care & to ask good questions. In your example of a brain hemorrhage, we have to know to ask if there are alternative treatments.

I don’t think rural residents are necessarily shortchanged in medical care. In my experience, local care has been exceptionally good. The one & only pediatrician in our county grew up here, & is so dedicated that she established a foundation to further assist our children. Our primary care provider actually specialized in rural medicine, & was trained to provide excellent care without resorting to unnecessary testing. Our vet actually remembers how much my cats weighed last year & has offered to make house calls because she thought that might be less traumatic for them than being transported to her office.
Do I think these docs are better because they don’t have to carry large patient loads? Yup. Do I think the American medical system could be improved? You betcha, & I also believe that it’s not going to be an easy task. The care of some patients, as in your example, is going to be compromised. Several times over the years members of my family have been advised to undergo procedures that were not as effective or were more invasive than necessary. Fortunately computer access & there is no reason today for anyone to not conduct due diligence on any care provider or procedure. Often there are options if we take the time for a bit of research. Emergencies may limit health care options, but for the most part, for those who have money & good insurance, there is little excuse for not seeking optimal care. Unfortunately for those with limited resources, there are few options. Americans die every day because they cannot afford basic life-saving care. That is truly shameful I had hope during the primaries that someone would take the lead who is devoted to providing universal health care in my lifetime, I don’t even think it’s on the table now. Medical advocates unite!

Does rural America have more defectives than urban areas?

Posted on February 26th, 2010 by admin in urban meeting place | 2 Comments »

I ask because there is more inbreeding that takes place out in the country. People in isolated population groups don’t know as many people and out in the sticks you may have to drive around more to meet people.

Inbred people are smaller and less intelligent, on average. Have you seen people stutter more out in the country? This is one flaw which can arise from inbreeding.

The country inbreeds are mostly just fictional stories. Though, it does happen. Just not as bad as people make it out to be.

I went to a small school in a small town and believe me when I say that we are anything but small. Most people in my class were above 6 foot tall. Though, I was only 5’10”. I was actually pretty small compared to most. It sucked.

We were also a fairly intelligent class. At least half of us graduated with 7 science, 6 math and 3 foreign language credits. We considered you an idiot if you didn’t take Spanish and French and make it to pre-cal before graduation.

So, you are just following stereotypes. I don’t know the statistics but there were no inbreeds in my community, as far as I know, and we were all pretty decent when it came to intelligence and size.
