I hear Seattle is a great place to live.
References :
I am in love with the Northeast region and particularly enjoy Boston. However, I understand your aversion to a metropolitan area. One of my favorite area in the world is a city called Portsmouth, NH. Also, check out medium-sized town in Connecticut like Waterbury or Danbury. There certainly is a live and let live sort of atmosphere, a great emphasis placed on education, and and untouchable historical value.

Good luck in your search!
