Me and a couple friends are looking to buy airsoft rifles and I want to know what a good FPS is. Most of the places we play at will be urban and a couple of woodland. We arent trying to make a team or none of that stuff we just want to play aroudn but we still want guns that will be accurate enough to hit each other.
How much FPS will be enough?
Most places you play at will have a field limit of 350FPS in close quarters combat (CQB) areas, and in open areas 450FPS.
I personally keep my gun around 350 and I never have a problem with either. Now if you want to leave bloody bruise look for a gun shooting about 450FPS. But anything between 300 and 450FPS hitting you is enough for the person to feel the slight sting and know they got hit.
Now keep in mind that most airsoft stock guns will only go about 40 to 50 yards with accuracy. But since you guys are just playing for fun and nothing serious I’d stick around the 300 – 360FPS range. Those guns tend to be the best price for newer players who aren’t serious and just want to fool around, BUT had a good gun to fool around with.
In terms of BB weight, don’t let this concern you. You’re just in it for fun, so get some cheap BBs and go to town.
.12g BBs travel faster w/ less accuracy
.20g BBs travel slower but have more accuracy
I wouldn’t recommend anything heavier than .20g BBs
For CQB, 300-350. For field and MOUT. 350-425.

i have this gun http://www.airsplat.com/Items/EL-BE-M82-Steyr.htm and it works fine. it shoots pretty far and my friends were surprised at its fire rate. plus it was cheap. to answer your question, dont get any mini electrics or anything under 200fps

I play in my friend’s backyard (its really big) and I have a 400 FPS gun. I got shot in the forehead with 380 fps and that left some nasty welts, one of which scarred. Then again, one of my friends has an AEG that cost 25 bucks. We were wearing winter coats, and I wasn’t sure if he had hit me. That was ~260 fps. 300-400 should be good. Don’t go over 400. For many fields, the FPS limit for AEGs is 400 fps, for snipers 450. For CQB, 350 fps.
Wear airsoft glasses/masks. If not, wear safety glasses. Wear something over your eyes at least. Eyes are really expensive these days.

I’d say a safe FPS to play around with that will yet still be accurate is 330-350. Anything over 370, you’ll have alot of pain. Anything under 300, you’ll be wishing for more.

If you are playing CQB, where it is in doors and the person should be 20 or so feet away from you, 350 fps should be good. If you are playing outdoors and the target is about 50+ feet away from you, a 400+ fps AEG should be just fine. For speeds that high, i recommend using .20 or higher BBs.

In my country, our fps limit is 550 cause that’s the maximum legal fps one can own. but of course, there are some guns that reach up to 680 fps. i own a 450 fps gun. i can use this for cqb but you have to know your gun very well cause you shouldn’t hit skin or clothing. I hit the vest, boots, helmet, hard mask, if it they have one. i only shoot semi automatic.
for starters, i recommend 350 and below. and get to upgrade to a tight barrel and replace the hopup assembly so that it will shoot straight for a longer range.
airsoft is fun and always keep safe. good luck!

About 2 years of playing around with friends before getting serious about the sport.
hi i suggest the jg mp5sd6 or the cyma version. they have around 300fps which is pefect for urban and cqc

Anything around 200FPS would do for urban warfare where combat is fairly close in.
That means you could either use a spring powered weapon like this AK-47:

Or even spray away with an AEG UZI like this one:
