Is there a place pref. on the e coast a single mom of 2 (w/o child sup) can live modestly on a teachers salary

Looking for a place either suburban or urban that would be safe for my kids and where I could afford an apartment. We plan to live modestly but even so, I will not be able to support myself and children on a teacher’s salary in the Northern Va. area. I plan to get certified to teach special ed. I do not receive child support but only debt is student loans. Childcare will not be needed b/c the kids will be in middle & HS. Thanks in advance for any input or suggestions!

Most of the east coast is easy to live on with a teacher’s salary. Just stay away from the big cities. Anywhere within 100 miles of NYC, 50 miles of Boston, Washington, Philadelpia, etc is expensive. But go to somewhere like say Rutland VT, Hartford CT, Harrisburg PA, or my town, Rochester, NY, is easily affordable.

That all depends, obviously. Since I don’t know what a teacher’s salary is, it would be hard for me to say.

What I would do if I were you, is to figure out your gross monthly income (salary / 12). Take that number and work out around 35% of it. That is a decent figure to use to calculate what sort of mortgage amount you can afford.

Try to find an online mortgage calculator and pop that number into it. That should give you a total mortgage amount that you can afford. Now, using that price, check into some of the areas you like and see what the average house is going for.

That should be a rough way to get an idea of where you can afford to live.

    Hope that helped!

Jacksonville NC is not the most cultured area but there are nearby cities you can take day trips to. Its a military town and the crime is low, there are plenty of good schools because of the high military population. The beach is 30 min away and Raleigh is about 1.5 hrs away. There is a nice coastal city called wilmington which is nearby also. You can rent a 3 bdr with a yard for around $700.00 my Mom works as a librarian at one of the elementary schools. I thought I would hate it here when I first moved here but have grown to love it. If you want some more info just email you and I can get you the info you need. I’d be glad to help.
