I got my 14 month old bloodhound when she was 6 mo. Up until that time she had been kept in a back yard and wasn’t really exposed to much. When I went to the house to get her (and see her for the first time) she came running up and was really friendly. I brought her from that place to my apartment (which is in a more urban area). Since then, she has been very timid. She’s afraid of trash bags on the sidewalk, people, signs, anything… When friends come over she barks and acts aggressive, but takes off running to hide. It’s just strange that the behavior changed so suddenly for no known reason (she’s never been abused that I know of).
Does anyone have any ideas of why she might have become so timid all of the sudden? Also, what can be done to solve the problem? I try taking her to Petsmart sometimes, but she’s so scared she has a bowel mvt or urinates inside the store.
I have had her in the same place for nearly 9 months. She should be used to her surroundings by now- but she only wants to hide out in the apartment.
She’s okay with other animals and loves to chase my cat. It’s just people and objects.
I take her to the fenced dog park sometimes. She’s okay with the dogs, but if a person tries to touch her, she runs away.
This behavior is not that unusual for this breed. More than one of them have exhibited it, and because yours was not socialized at a young age before you got her, it just exhibits more.
terrified bloodhound?

I think it might be the noise/commotion- take her out at the quietest parts of the day and let her adjust slowly.

is she just a timid dog. our female dog is so timid she is afraid of yorkshire terrier puppies and cats.

Maybe you can start by having people come over and introduce her to the people – let her see that things are not so scary.
What about a behavior class at Petsmart?
What about going to the park and sitting there with the pup and let her venture away from you (while on a leash) and let her meet other people – this might help.
Edit: This website says some bloodhounds are naturally timid.

This is actually a common thing for a hunting dog due to all the wonderful (note sarcasm) years of inbreeding. In a English Springer Spaniel it is called Springer rage, in which they either act aggressive or very timid, each bred has its own slang for it. Now first off, this is not Okay behavior even when they are timid, and I know it is hard but you have to correct this behavior with saying no, and it is hard to do because they are your baby and you want to comfort not discipline being scared. Also get your pup a good size kennel, not the plastic traveling one, the one that is a cage, and teach the pup kennel up, open the cage take her by the collar and say kennel up as you tug her towards the opening, blood hounds are smart you probably only need to do this a few times with a treat when she does it before she catches on and does it on her own at your command. This is a safe haven for her, if she gets scared kennel her up, and when friends come over put her in the kennel for a few minutes let your friends get settled then let her out and tell your friends to ignore her she will come to them when she is ready, and not to make sudden movements til she is use to seeing them there. this will give you a start if you need to as well you can go to the vet and they can per scribe a anti psychotic pill for your dog, yes they have them, make it a temp fix though, I only kept my dog on them for 6 months while I was learning to deal with her timid/aggressive behavior

Straight from my vet when dealing with the same behavior in my english springer spanial

My bloodhound was a scaredy cat too, because he wasn’t socialized enough. You need to make her face the things she’s timid about, and feed her treats while you do it, so that she associates it with something good, and isn’t afraid anymore. It worked for my Red. Bloodhounds can be like that if they come from backyard breeders, which mine did. When you take her to the store, make sure you pet her and give her treats. I hope it works, bloodhounds are normally very loving dogs, so just comfort her and correct her so that she isn’t timid, because timidity in dogs is not a good thing. Good luck!!!!

This is really normal behavior for Bloodhounds that haven’t been socialized. She is young and it sounds like you are doing really well with it.
Unfortunately people don’t realize that Bloodhounds are extremely sensitive. I feel like I am living with "Rainman", because they are autistic. Keep socializing her. PetSmart is scary for many dogs. Shiny floors, smells(you have a scenthound) noises. Mine for some reason go nuts at the "Mary-in-the bathtub" down the street.
